Building Design, the UK’s leading architectural weekly magazine, has looked back at some of the nations best council estates. We are proud to announce that CityWest Homes managed estate Churchill Gardens, Pimlico, has shot in at number four.
The estate was developed between 1946 and 1962 to replace an area of Victorian terraces on the north bank of the Thames which had been damaged by bombs during the Second World War. The architects, Powell and Moya, were strongly influenced by Dutch housing of the thirties.
Now the largest estate in Westminster, Churchill Gardens accommodates 1,800 homes in 39 blocks and is grade two listed. The estate is also home to the Pimlico Heating District Undertaking, the UK’s first combined heat and power network which was built over 50 years ago to combat London’s air pollution. Maria Gillies, head of CityWest Direct south, CityWest Homes, said: “We are thrilled that Churchill Gardens has received recognition in this list. Through high quality maintenance, services and resident engagement, we are working to make this and all our estates the best they can be. We hope to see even more of our estates in this list next time.”
