Local boxing club calls for volunteers to help meet demand

A resident run boxing club is looking for volunteer coaches and general support to help run their growing classes.

The Churchill Gardens Boxing Club, which is based on CityWest Homes’ managed estate Churchill Gardens, runs a range of classes through the week to suit ages 6-49 years old. The club is affiliated with the Amateur Boxing Association and was set up by CityWest Homes and local residents in 2010.

The club is open to all Westminster residents and has gone from strength to strength. With over 60 members and equipped with a full sized boxing ring, punch bags and gloves, it is now in need of volunteers to help meet demand from residents.

Sue Walsh, Chair of the Churchill residents’ association, actively supports the club, said: “The club has been offering boxing sessions to people of all ages since 2010. We’re an organisation run by the community for the community. We are always looking for people willing to give up a few hours each week to help support the club.”

Scott Hammond, clerk of works, CityWest Homes, recently volunteered to coach at the club. He said: “Anyone who has seen this organisation in action will know how important it is for the local community, which is why I wanted to do my bit to help keep it running.

Boxing is a highly disciplined sport and it’s a great way to get fit, have fun, and teach local youngsters new skills.”
