London estates flagged as two of the best in the UK

CityWest Homes managed estates have been flagged as two of the best in Britain – and that’s official.

The estates have won the prestigious Green Flag Award, given to the best green spaces in the country. While Lillington and Longmoore Gardens estate has waved the flag for eight years, Lisson Green is celebrating a second year win.

The estates joined a record breaking 1,476 parks and green spaces across the UK to receive the award from environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. Westminster is home to the winning estates and has won 25 Green Flags, proving that the grass can be greener in the heart of a thriving city.

The green team at CityWest Homes have worked hard to create an urban oasis for residents to enjoy. Getting to the root of their success, Liz Waine, south operations manager for CityWest Homes, said: “Green spaces have long since been recognised as a highly valuable resource for the well-being of the community. We want to provide a fantastic space for our residents to enjoy and what we’ve created is a true team effort.

“To receive the award eight years running is a proud moment for us. A big thank you goes to our residents and team for their dedication in continuing to make the area a great place to live and work.”

Councillor Heather Acton, Westminster City Council’s cabinet member for sustainability, said: “We are very proud of our open spaces and are fully committed to ensuring they meet the high standards our residents, businesses and visitors expect.

“It can be easy to take for granted how lucky we are in Westminster to have so many wonderful parks and gardens on our doorstep, but these awards are a recognition of all the hard work that goes into maintaining and improving Westminster’s parks and green spaces so they can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike, not to mention their contribution to improving biodiversity and air quality in central London.

“As one of the most populated boroughs in London with the additional pressures of a million visitors a day, the open spaces we have are particularly precious, both as an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and a vital aspect of our efforts to create a sustainable environment for all. Winning this number of awards is the icing on the cake.”

This year’s awards were launched on Monday 28 July at an all-day event held in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to mark Love Parks Week, an annual celebration of the UK’s Britain’s parks and green spaces.
