At a ceremony on Thursday 30 October, the south Area Management Committee (AMC) celebrated local heroes. The event honoured the fantastic achievements of those who go the extra mile for their neighbours in the south of Westminster.
Supported by ward councillors, the event was held by the south AMC in Grosvenor estate. It was a fantastic opportunity for the south AMC to increase their profile. They were also able to recognise those who have received funding from the south community chest. Resident Associations from across the south area were invited.
The south AMC performs many functions. These include providing funding from the community chest to local groups. Following a passionate speech by Aly Valli, the chair of the south AMC, three trophies were given to residents who have given back to their community.
The first award, ‘best sustainable project’, went to Hayley McAvoy. Hayley used the funding to provide activities for an arts and crafts group called the ‘Pimlico Picassos’. This project has continued to thrive.
The second award was for ‘best volunteer’, scooped by Sue Clive. A member of the gardening club and estate services sub-committee, Sue has worked tirelessly to maintain the Green Flag Award winning gardens at Lillington and Longmoore Gardens estate. Sue also established the first children’s garden, which allows young people to explore and learn about nature.
The third award was for ‘bid that has demonstrated its impact on community cohesion’. This was given to the Churchill Gardens Residents Association. The group has carried out a range of projects in the community. These include a spectacular event in 2012, which attracted hundreds of people from the area. Celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the event provided activities for residents of all ages.
Leon Williams, south area manager, CityWest Homes, said: “The ceremony was a great opportunity to raise the profile of the AMC and celebrate the fantastic projects which have benefitted from funding over the last three years. We wanted to acknowledge the amazing contributions made by so many volunteers to their community. It’s wonderful to see residents have pride in their homes, and will give their time and energy to making it an even better place for their neighbours.”
Well done to everyone who worked so hard for their community.
